As we have established in other areas of the site, the "infectious diseases" of the 19th and 20th centuries in developed countries were eradicated due to social reforms (better sewage facilities, cleaner water supplies, more spacious homes, more food and better built towns and cities) and before mass vaccination campaigns were mandated by governments these diseases had significantly declined, or their mortality rates had come down to virtual insignificance (indicating that it is lack of nutrition that makes the diseases fatal). In this section we will look at the role of good nutrition in health and disease and how deficiency in key nutrients affects the susceptibility and seriousness of disease in individuals.
